Atchley, Pleas Marion

Pleas Marion "Uncle Pleas" Atchley (1877-1952) was a teacher at Bible Training School from 1941 to 1947. A resident of Sevierville, Tennessee, he became affiliated with BTS after the school relocated to Sevierville from Cleveland. He taught Latin, Algebra, Commercial Mathematics, and Geometry and was one of the sponsors for the Boys' Athletic Club. When the school returned to Cleveland as Lee College in 1947, Atchley remained in his hometown of Sevierville and did not continue teaching.
Atchley was an committed supporter of BTS. When the school was trying to establish a library to help achieve accreditation for the high school and to begin the Junior College, Atchley gave 375 books from his personal library and secured a donation of used books from the University of Tennessee's library. He also spent the summer of 1941 building bookshelves and tables for the new library.
Atchley was educated at Harrison Chilhowee Institute before earning a B.S. at Carson-Newman College. He also studied at The University of Tennessee. He was married to Lee McMahan Atchley (1888-1947). They are buried at Alder Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Sevier County, Tennessee.
