Ellis, James Benton

James Benton "J.B." Ellis (1870-1946) served as the third superintendent for the Bible Training School, now Lee University.
In those first couple of years as the school was increasing in enrollment, Nora Chambers carried the increasing responsibility for teaching and grading. She also graded the correspondence course tests regularly submitted by hundreds of students.
In 1920 J.B. Ellis, originally of Alabama, joined Nora Chambers as an instructor, and he was named principal of the Bible school. He served for two years before resigning due to ill health. However, in 1923, at age 53, he was called back to the school when F.J. Lee was elected as general overseer of the Church of God.
Ellis had experience with the school and the church needed his guidance, and the Assembly elected him as Superintendent. He served only one year and then stepped aside again due to his ill health.
Ellis Hall dormitory was named for him, as is the current Atkins-Ellis Hall.
