Homecoming Queen

The first “Homecoming Queen” at Lee was crowned in 1960 when Charlotte Miller was presented to the alumni gathered for the annual activities.
The tradition can be traced to Lee's first Homecoming for alumni in 1958, when a Football King and Queen were crowned during halftime of the Homecoming football game. Charles Sloan was Football King and Becky Tull was Football Queen. Earlier that year, in March 1958, the school had crowned its first Campus Queen: Annette Lee of Lakeland, Florida, after she won a contest based on a point-system: 10 points for talent, 15 points for school activities, 20 points for personal charm, and a certain number of points (up to 50) for money turned in for the contest. It seems a combination of the Campus Queen and the Football Queen evolved into the designation of “Homecoming Queen”, which is elected by a vote among the student body.
When Charlotte Miller was elected as Homecoming Queen in 1960, her crown was placed upon her head by Miss Lee College, Helen Anderson. Each year thereafter, the previously reigning queen places the crown on the newly elected queen during the presentation ceremony.
According to the Lee College Clarion issue from December 1960, “The Lee College football field marked the setting of the crowning of the 1960 Home-coming Queen. Queen Charlotte Miller, nominated by the Freshmen football team and escorted by Dale Hughes, captain of the team, was crowned Home-coming Queen by Miss Lee College, Helen Anderson. The event took place during halftime of the exciting football game between Alumni and Lee All-Stars. The queen was attended by Judy Maxwell, escorted by Freddie Killman, Senior team captain, and Janice Hughes, escorted by Lavoy Newton, High School team captain. Bouquets of red roses were presented to the queen and her attendants.”
