Payne, Horace Lee

Horace Lee Payne (1892-1956) was one of the original 12 students to enroll the first term of the Bible Training School, now Lee University.

Payne was
a 25-year-old farmer from Rock Island, Tennessee, when he enrolled at Bible Training School. He was the son of the late Reverend Winfield Scott Paine, who had preached at the Church of God General Assembly a few short years prior, and Horace was a first cousin to Reverend T. S. Payne, who later served as superintendent of the Bible school.

Interestingly, Horace claimed exemption on his World War One draft card on the basis of being a conscientious objector, as were many members of the Church of God during that time due to the holiness roots of the denomination and the Quaker background of its leader, A. J. Tomlinson. Nonetheless, Horace was drafted into service during the First World War and was unable to complete his training at the Bible school. He left the school on February 1, 1918.

Horace Payne died in Fulton County, Georgia, in 1956 and is buried at Fort Hill Cemetery in Cleveland, Tennessee. His funeral was held at the Wildwood Church of God of Prophecy, which congregation is now the Peerless Road Church. It was conducted by Bishop Milton Tomlinson, who was the leader of the Church of God of Prophecy at that time. Horace’s brother was a prominent administrator with the Church of God of Prophecy.
