Trewhitt, Katherine Lowery

Katherine Alice Lowery [Trewhitt] (1912-1999) was hired in 1932 to teach at the Bible Training School. She became the second full-time, non-Church of God teacher. She also was the first teacher to have a bachelor’s degree.
In those days the Bible school’s classes were held in an auditorium shared with North Cleveland Church. Katherine lived across the street from the auditorium. Having graduated from Bradley High School in 1929, she enrolled at the University of Chattanooga to study English and Classics. She was still a student in Chattanooga when she began teaching Greek and Latin at BTS—commuting back and forth between classes and teaching. In 1933 she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and with honors. She also had been elected unanimously by the university faculty in Chattanooga to be admitted to an honor society, of which only five students were selected that year. A member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, she was very involved in the ministry there, and she continued to teach at BTS until 1936.
She married in 1935 to Francis "Frank" G. Trewhitt (1905-1972) and earned a Master’s degree from Duke University. Afterward, she taught elementary school locally, served as an administrator with the city schools for 20 years, and taught English at Cleveland State for almost 10 years. She also taught at Tennessee Tech and the University of Tennessee. Locally she helped establish special education classes in public schools and was a noted storyteller, historian, and local author.
